EIVA Teams Complete Successful Season in Kansas City
Posted: 4/11/2012
Thirty-one EIVA teams completed their seasons at the 2012 NCVF National Championships in Kansas City, MO on Saturday. The 31 teams marked an all-time high for the EIVA's representation at the national tournament. When all was said and done after the three day long tournament, several EIVA teams and players returned home with awards. EIVA D-I Champion Penn State advanced to the Gold Bracket through two days of pool play and challenge rounds, but the Nittany Lions eventually fell to national runner-up UC-Berkeley 18-25, 26-24, 21-23 in nail-biting fashion and were forced to settle for 9th place. In Division I-AA, North Carolina State turned heads by advancing all the way to the championship match before being defeated by UCLA 27-25, 18-25, 7-15. The Wolfpack's EIVA South rivals UNC-Chapel Hill finished tied for 5th after succumbing to UCLA in the Gold Bracket quarterfinals. Duke fell just short of winning the Silver Bracket by losing to Ball State in the final match, while Maryland beat Massachusetts to claim the Bronze Division title. In the semifinals of the DI-AAA Silver Bracket, Albany defeated Liberty en route to a victory over UC-Merced to claim the championship. Two EIVA North teams also met in Division II, when #6 ranked Army beat SUNY-Brockport 20-25, 25-21, 15-10 in the first round of the Gold Bracket. The Cadets went on to lose to Providence (CA) in the quarterfinals. Georgetown also advanced to the Gold Bracket before losing to eventual national champion Wisconsin-LaCrosse. Penn State-B and James Madison-B both reached the Gold Bracket of Division III, where both were ousted by eventual national champion Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Virginia Tech-B managed to beat Wisconsin-Madison-B for the Silver Bracket championship, while Rutgers-B defeated Michigan-B for the Bronze Bracket championship. In total 14 EIVA players were recognized individually for their excellence on the court. The complete list of All-Tournament Teams for each division is included here.
Penn State Repeats as EIVA Champions

The Penn State Nittany Lions proved once again that they are the best team in the EIVA by winning the 2012 EIVA East Coast Championships on Saturday at the U.S. Naval Academy. Penn State finished 3-0 in pool play after beating George Mason (25-23, 25-27, 15-12), Delaware (25-11, 24-26, 15-11), and Army (25-13, 25-18). Losing sets to George Mason and Delaware proved costly, as the Nittany Lions fell short of earning a first round playoff bye. The Lions, however, methodically clawed their way through a rejuvenated Army team in the quarterfinals, winning 25-20, 25-23 to force a semifinal match up against James Madison in the semifinals. The Dukes, who lost to Penn State in the 2011 finals, entered the match poised for revenge. EIVA South MVP Phil Slocum led JMU to a fast start and a 25-19 win in set one, but the Nittany Lions roared back to take the next two sets 25-17, 15-12 behind the stellar play of Setter Steve Semler and Right Side Hitter Andy Buss. The Lions would go on to the championship match to face perennial power Virginia Tech, who advanced through pool play undefeated after beating Rutgers, Buffalo, and Penn and earning a bye to the semifinals. The Hokies overcame a gritty Pittsburgh team (25-22, 23-25, 15-11) in the semifinals before meeting Penn State in the championship match. Penn State controlled much of the first set and cruised to a 24-20 lead before Virginia Tech fought back to cut the margin to 24-23. However, a timeout followed by an Andy Buss kill sealed the deal for Penn State 25-23. Virginia Tech responded in set two, fighting to take an 18-15 lead. Penn State called another timeout, and the two teams then battled to 20-20 before Virginia Tech Coach Sean Callahan called his team to the sideline to talk things over. The Hokies ran off four straight points to build a 24-20 lead before closing the set with a 25-21 win. The third set was a back and forth affair from start to finish. An Aaron Taylor block put Virginia Tech up 8-7 at the switch, and the two teams stayed knotted up until Penn State's Tyler Still hammered home back to back kills to put the Lions up 13-12 and 14-13. The Hokies would force a 14-14 tie before Penn State sided out to 15-14 and then took advantage of a costly error when Steve Semler drilled an Virginia Tech over-set to the floor to give Penn State the 16-14 win and their second straight East Coast Championship. Semler was named the 2012 EIVA Most Valuable Player, and teammates Buss and Still earned All-EIVA honors.

Buffalo, Brockport Clinch North Titles
Posted: 3/12/2012
Despite having only a 3-8 divisional record throughout the season, Buffalo entered the EIVA North's Divisional Championship tournament confident that it could once again establish itself as the division's top team. The Bulls did exactly that, beating Syracuse, Cortland, and Army twice, once in pool play and again in the finals (25-22, 16-25, 15-13), to win the divisional crown. The Cadets, who held the top spot in the North all season, gave Buffalo all it could handle, but ultimately fell short to a fully staffed Buffalo squad. “At the Divisional championships we were able to put our full squad out there and really play together as a team for the first time this semester, and I believe the results showed what we are capable of, “ said UB team captain Ryan Garby. Garby was also voted the D-I North's Most Valuable Player. “The whole team stepped up on Saturday, we played together and everyone came up with big plays when we needed them,” Garby said. Garby was aided throughout the day by teammate and setter Craig Freier, who also credited the win to a total team effort. “It's really as simple as not having our entire team there at the first two play dates. Division playoffs this past weekend was the first time all year that we were together as a full team. While we as a team are still nowhere near where we want to be come nationals, we were still able to pull out not one, but two wins over a much improved Army team.” Buffalo hopes to rely on another team effort in order to earn a higher finish at the upcoming EIVA Championships, an event in which the Bulls have traditionally faltered. “Hopefully we are able to build on our division title run and realize that we can't play like we are the favorites, because we aren't. Last time I checked, JMU, VT, PSU, and George Mason were still the favorites… our team really needs to come together and gel at the right time in order to take down the big guns,” Freier said.
In the North's Division II Championship event, Brockport extended its reign of dominance, defeating intrastate rival Albany 2-0 (25-21, 25-16) in the championship match after cruising through pool play without dropping a set. In fact, the Golden Eagles have only lost a single set all season long, at the hands of Niagara CC on February 4 th . Brockport concluded the regular season with an impressive 18-0 match record and near flawless set record of 36-1. “I think part of our success comes from the fact that all of our players come out of high school with a lot of skill and playing experience already. A majority of the guys on our team played on some of the top high school clubs in the area like Eden and Pace and for whatever reason they choose to come to Brockport. They've already played against the top level of competition so it's an easy transition for them when they come here. I also think it has to do with the fact that we play together as a team. We all get along really well and you can see it when we're on the court. Each person understands their role and nobody tries to do too much,” said team captain and setter Corey Desiderio. “On the court, I feel like our two leaders are Andrew Laluk and new transfer Tom Kotrys. Andrew is a quiet leader but his play really picks up the team. As the libero, we (the team) run as he does. He's an exceptional passer and it's really nice as the setter, to know that the ball will be where it needs to be 95% of the time. It makes my job a lot easier. As far as Tom, he is the vocal leader of the team. He really gets the team going when he's on the court. As a middle, he's not always in the game, so it's a tough job for him. But when he is in the game, he really provides that pick-me-up that's needed. The team plays harder off of the intensity that he brings onto the court.” Brockport will carry its momentum into the EIVA Championships, where the team hopes to defend its title and win a second consecutive East Coast crown.
''Brothers'' Breaking Barriers

For the first time in recent memory, Buffalo is not sitting comfortably atop the D-I North. In fact, the Bulls have earned a humbling 3-8 divisional record, due in part to the absence of several starters at the North's two Divisional Play Dates. While Buffalo has struggled, a new leader has emerged and taken the division by storm. The Cadets of the United States Military Academy have cruised through the division with a perfect 11-0 record this season. Curious about the team's recent triumphs, EIVA Commissioner Neiad Ammary reached out to Army's team President, CDT LT Jared Thomas, in order to learn more and discovered something remarkable. The team's success in 2012 is no mere anomaly. The Cadets have capitalized on the continuity, commitment, and leadership of every individual on the team, and in doing so, have epitomized what club volleyball, and perhaps collegiate athletics in general, should be all about. Another Year of Growth for EIVA
Posted: 1/12/2012
The EIVA has grown steadily in recent years, and that trend has continued in 2012. As the 2012 regular season officially begins, the EIVA welcomes four new member schools, with at least two more potential newcomers on the horizon. The State University of New York at Binghamton becomes the seventh institution in the D-I North, while a long-time EIVA and national powerhouse in the University of Maryland rejoins the D-I Central after a yearlong hiatus. St. Bonaventure will join the D-II North, and Lynchburg College of Virginia will be welcomed into the D-II South this season. "I am happy to report another year of growth for the EIVA," said Commissioner Neiad Ammary. "The conference has grown and improved in organization every year since I have been Commissioner. We are already the largest collegiate volleyball conference in the nation. It's great to know that so many teams have maintained their loyalty to the EIVA over the years, and even greater to know that more teams are interested in joining us in the future. I think the new teams will intensify the competition within the divisions, which already feature some long-standing rivalries between traditional foes." Colgate University and Niagara University have also expressed interest in joining the EIVA. "A lot of credit has to be given to the Divisional Representatives from each of the regions, since they do a lot of work throughout the year not only to organize and monitor the competitions, but also to advise each existing program and help welcome new teams into the fold." With 24 teams battling in Division I and 31 teams battling in Division II, gold medals at the 2012 EIVA East Coast Championships will be harder than ever to earn.

Nittany Lions, Overmeyer Overcome
Posted: 4/3/2011
This time, Penn State didn't come up short. Four times in the past five seasons, the Nittany Lions fought their way through pool and bracket play, all the way to the conference finals, only to lose to Maryland and Virginia Tech, twice each. Yesterday, though, the Lions got some revenge, clawing out a tough win over the three time defending champion Hokies in the semifinals 2-1 (22-25, 25-21, 15-10) before an exciting showdown with perennial power James Madison in the finals. It would be the first time the two teams faced each other all season. The Dukes, led by talented young Setter Phil Slocum, reached the final match by defeating upstart Delaware in the semifinals 2-0 (25-23, 25-16). Like Penn State, James Madison had a history of coming up short in the championship tournament, losing semifinal matches to Penn State several times in recent years. This time, though, the Dukes reached the finals, determined to win it all. JMU gave Penn State all it could handle in the championship match, coming out hot and winning the first set 25-19. The Dukes controlled much of the second set and appeared to be just moments away from wrapping up a title, but the Nittany Lions refused to die and fought back to take the second set 25-23, thanks in large part to the gritty defensive efforts of Libero and team captain Austin Overmeyer. The frustration visible on his face, Overmeyer chose not to complain when several close calls didn't go Penn State's way, including one halfway through the third set when the Libero unnecessarily slid under net and across the centerline, over-anticipating a ball that ended up not trickling over the net anyway. Instead, Overmeyer made several key passes and heroic digs that allowed the Lions' Setter Steve Semler to distribute the ball to a slew of capable attackers, and ultimately allowed Penn State to win the set 15-12 and claim the 2011 EIVA Championship. Overmeyer was voted Most Valuable Player, while teammates Steve Semler and Tyler Still were voted onto the All-EIVA team, along with JMU's Phil Slocum and Brandt Martin, Virginia Tech's Aaron Taylor, and Delaware's Bobby O'Grady.
In Division II, Brockport returned to championship form, defeating Northern rival Niagara County Community College 2-1 (23-25, 25-13, 15-12) to claim their second EIVA title in three seasons. Brockport Outside Hitter Andrew Laluk was voted MVP, while Middle Hitter Brian Page and Opposite Steve Sisson earned All-EIVA honors, along with NCCC's Kyle Tomczak and Andrew Braun, Virginia Tech's Winfield Whittington, and Fredonia's Rene Ferris.

Bulls, Lions, Dukes Claim Division Crowns
Posted: 3/29/2011
The North, Central, and South champions have been crowned in the EIVA's Division-I tier for 2011. It was business as usual for Buffalo, who won yet another North title, finishing with a 15-1 divisional record throughout the season. The Bulls' only loss came mid-season, at the hands of second place Army (10-6). For the third consecutive year, the Penn State Nittany Lions (15-0) are the pride of the Central Division, trailed by the University of Delaware (12-3). Perhaps the biggest story, though, is the change in power down South, where the James Madison Dukes (15-1) finished atop the three-time reigning EIVA champion Virginia Tech Hokies (11-4). The Hokies, however, will have a chance to defend their East Coast crown at the EIVA Championships on Saturday at the United States Naval Academy. The field of teams for the championship event is set to be released by mid-week.

The event, scheduled for Saturday, April 2nd, will feature 24 teams -- 12 in Division I and 12 in Division II.
