EIVA Teams Finish Strong at National Championships
Posted: 4/6/2010
Most players, fans, officials, and volleyball enthusiasts agree that the 2010 NCVF Collegiate Volleyball Championship tournament in Louisville, KY was a smashing success. Thirty EIVA teams competed in the three day event, culminating another exciting year of collegiate club volleyball. In Division I, the James Madison Dukes were the class of the EIVA, pulling off several upsets on their way to the semifinals and a 3rd place finish. JMU defeated #3 Illinois in nail biting fashion (25-23, 21-25, 15-13) in the quarterfinals of the gold bracket before falling to #7 Lakeland in the semifinals. Defending EIVA Champions Virginia Tech, ranked #4 coming in to the tournament, got off to a great start, going undefeated throughout the first two days. However, the Hokies got an unlucky draw against #2 Utah Valley in the first round of the gold bracket, losing a hotly contested match 2-1 (22-25, 34-32, 9-15) before a large crowd of spectators. Like Virginia Tech, Penn State also finished tied for 9th place overall. The Nittany Lions lost a heartbreaker to Wisconsin-Whitewater (28-26, 23-25, 12-15) in the first round of Saturday's gold bracket. Pittsburgh and Pennsylvania turned heads by advancing to the silver bracket and finishing tied for 25th. George Mason finished 26th with a win over Ball State in the bronze final. Several EIVA players were named to the All-Tournament Team. James Madison's Daniel Fanning was named to the 1st team as a Middle Hitter, while teammates Hank Thornhill (OH), Patrick Hodge (MH), and Phil Slocum (S) were voted onto the 2nd team. Virginia Tech's Brian Pine (RSH) and Penn State's Austin Overmeyer (L) received recognition as Honorable Mention. ----- In Division I-AA, Liberty, Delaware, Cornell, and Virginia all advanced to the gold bracket. Liberty finished tied for 3rd overall, beating Cornell in the quarterfinals before losing to runner-up Cincinnati in the semifinals, while the Delaware Blue Hens finished tied for 5th, losing to national champion DuPage for the second year in a row. Virginia was ousted by West Virginia and was forced to settle for 9th place. Liberty's Gerrit Buintjes (MH) and Delaware's Mike Videtto (L) were 1st Team All-Tournament selections, while Liberty Libero Jared Horrigan and Delaware OH Connor Jackson were named to the 2nd Team. Cornell's Alex Fisher (RSH) and Ryan Winn (MH), Delaware's Kent Davidson (OH) and Brian Stump (OH), and Virginia's Robert Hott (MH) were recognized on the Honorable Mention. ----- In Division III, Virginia Tech B finished tied for 3rd place, while Pittsburgh B finished tied for 5th. Virginia Tech's Alex Horner (OH) earned 1st Team accolades, along with Pittsburgh's Ali Nabavian (MH).

Hokies Three-Peat as EIVA Champions
Posted: 3/28/2010
For the third consecutive year, the Virginia Tech Hokies are the EIVA East Coast Champions. Virginia Tech did not drop a game all day in Maryland's Reckord Armory, trouncing Army, Navy, and Pittsburgh in pool play before defeating Buffalo 2-0 (25-21, 25-23) in the semifinal and Penn State 2-0 (25-19, 27-25) in the championship match. Setter Ryan Arcese orchestrated a relentless attack in match after match, before being named the EIVA's Most Valuable Player for 2010. The Nittany Lions brought all they they could at the Hokies, who ultimately proved too tough. Penn State, led by All-EIVA Setter Patrick Vandenberg and All-EIVA Opposite Josh Wingenroth, battled evenly for much of game two. The Nittany Lions reached the finals by defeating James Madison 2-0 (25-23, 29-27) in the semifinals. In Division II, Virginia Tech-B topped their South rivals James Madison-B to take home the title. Outside Hitter Alex Horner was voted the Most Valuable Player for Division II.

EIVA Sending Record 31 Teams to National Championships
Posted: 2/26/2010
The National Collegiate Volleyball Federation (NCVF) has teamed up with USA Volleyball to host the biggest collegiate volleyball championship event ever. With 271 teams already registered, the Louisville Convention Center will be nearly covered from wall to wall in volleyball Sport Court. The EIVA will be sending 31 teams to battle for national championships in Divisions I, I-AA, II, and III, with 15 of those teams in Division I. It is the highest number of teams that has ever represented the EIVA at the event. Only the Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) will feature more teams, with 35.

NCVF National Rankings Released
Posted: 2/16/2010
The NCVF released its second Mizuno National Rankings today. The EIVA teams maintained their presence in the top 25. Virginia Tech is still atop the poll at #1, while James Madison maintained their #5 ranking by sweeping its South rivals at a recent play date. Due to bad weather, Penn State was inactive and slipped three spots to #10. Buffalo, still perfect in the North, remains at #13, while Navy enjoys a bump up to the #19 spot. In Division II, defending national champion SUNY-Cortland claims the #9 spot, while Army sits at #18. The Georgetown Hoyas also received Honorable Mention for Division II. The complete rankings are available on the NCVF website.

NCVF National Rankings Released
Posted: 2/1/2010
The NCVF released its first set of national rankings for men's Division I today. The initial poll features several EIVA teams, including the Virginia Tech Hokies, who enter the regular season as the nation's top team. It marks the first time in recent memory that an EIVA team has held the top spot. The Hokies proved they deserve consideration as the nation's best by winning the Back to the Hardwood Classic at Michigan State, the country's largest preseason tournament that features many of America's top teams. Virginia Tech's South Division rival, James Madison, appears at the #5 spot, after winning the Derrick Beckner Memorial tournament and the Messiah College tournament. A second place finish at the Hardwood Classic was enough to earn Penn State a #7 ranking in the initial poll. Buffalo enjoys one of its best rankings in recent years at the #13 spot, and despite losing last year's EIVA MVP Austin Lanteigne, Navy has proven it still is a team to be reckoned with and comes in at the #22 spot. The poll is sponsored by Mizuno and scheduled to be released every two weeks.

Hokies Win Hardwood, Other EIVA Teams Impress
Posted: 11/18/2009
The two time reigning EIVA champions look poised for a three-peat. Virginia Tech made serious waves on the national radar by winning the Back to the Hardwood Classic this past weekend at Michigan State. It was an all EIVA final, as the Hokies defeated Penn State 2-0 (25-23, 25-17) to claim the biggest tournament win in the country so far this pre-season. It was the first time that two EIVA teams advanced to the finals in Hardwood history. Penn State had beaten Virginia Tech 2-1 (26-24, 25-27, 15-13) earlier in the challenge round, only to fall to the Hokies later in the championship match. EIVA North powerhouse SUNY-Buffalo also made the trip to East Lansing and faired well, finishing second in their pool to Miami (OH) and advancing to the gold bracket, where they were knocked out by Penn State. The Nittany Lions also recorded wins over Dayton, Purdue, Cincinnati, and DuPage. Virginia Tech posted big wins over Wisconsin, Illinois State, Illinois, and Ball State. CEO of USA Volleyball, Doug Beal, was in attendance to watch the action. Several other EIVA teams have also performed well this pre-season. James Madison defeated Virginia Tech in the South's first Divisional Play Date on October 31st and also won the Messiah College tournament last weekend in Grantham, PA. Rutgers proved they will be a force this season by beating Boston College in the finals of the Maryland Terrapin Invitational. Action will continue to heat up this Fall and Winter as teams get more active in upcoming events.

EIVA Growing Fast, as New Teams Join
Posted: 9/21/2009
The EIVA has experienced a steady growth in the number of teams participating in recent years. Temple University, Richmond University, and SUNY-Oneonta were among the new teams in 2008-09. This year, there is projected to be an even bigger boom, as the Pittsburgh Panthers and Rutgers Scarlet Knights have committed to join the D-I Central and several other schools have expressed their intent to join what is already the largest collegiate volleyball conference in the country.

"The EIVA offers better competition for a school of our size," said Alex Hinsey, President of Pitt's team. "The EIVA gives us an opportunity to make ourselves better players, and a better team."

The Panthers are coming off a strong showing at the I-AA level in last year's national championships and are hoping to keep improving. "The EIVA offers us better exposure on the national level. Our goal this year is to make it into Division I-A. We know that if we can put up a good showing in a highly regarded conference like the EIVA it will increase our chances of getting in. We are also looking at playing in bigger tournaments with better competition to help our chances."

"Our impression of the conference is that it is the best conference in the Northeast. We know that the teams in the conference are very strong teams from top to bottom. Some of the teams are nationally ranked and we know that one of the teams won nationals last year. We are excited to go up against teams that we know can compete with from across the country. It will give our team a chance to see where we stand."

Pitt returns ten players from last year's squad and will be led at the Libero position by senior captain Mike Platt, a four year starter. Middles Russ Hoburg and Mike Krieg will carry the offense. Hoburg was an Honorable Mention at the national championships a season ago.

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights are coming off of a championship season in the MACVC and hope to continue their winning ways in the EIVA this year. Rutgers was a long time pillar of the EIVA for decades and was dominant on the national scene throughout the 90's. Unfortunately, the program fell off the radar and eventually dropped out of the EIVA in 2005. In the past three years, however, there has been a great resurgence in the level of talent and organization for Rutgers, who now has four teams training on campus. The A team destroyed its Division II and III opponents in the MACVC last year and completed an undefeated season before making a strong showing in Division I-A at the national championships. The Scarlet Knights turned heads in Kansas City by challenging eventual champion Fresno State in a hard fought pool play loss.

This year, despite being without the leadership of last year's Setter Greg Hunter, Head Coach Jamie Hor is looking forward to continued success. "We're really looking foward to this season with the EIVA and we're hoping to do well and stay competitive with the other EIVA teams," Hor said. "We'll be running a whole new offense with two new setters."

Both Pitt and Rutgers will join the already loaded Central Division. Other schools expected to join the EIVA ranks this year include Marist College (NY), Virginia Commonwealth University, St. John Fischer (NY), Monroe Community College (NY), American University (DC), George Washington University, and Christopher Newport University (VA).

Cortland Wins Division II National Championship
Posted: 4/12/2009
With their gold medals around their necks, the Cortland Red Dragons stood triumphantly on the stage of Kansas City's Municipal Auditorium and then posed for team pictures, realizing that they will forever be remembered as national champions. In heart pounding fashion, Cortland defeated Eastern Illinois 2-1 (27-25, 25-21, 18-16) to capture the 2009 NCVF Division II Championship. Each game went back and forth, as the two teams traded momentum. Thanks to a punishing barrage of kills by Middle Hitter Bryan Patterson, Cortland controlled much of the first game, maintaining as much as a four point lead before Eastern Illinois closed the gap down the stretch. In game two, however, Cortland got stuck in a bad rotation while Patterson was on the bench, and Eastern Illinois took advantage of the opportunity to smother the Red Dragons' offensive attack. Eastern Illinois seized the lead halfway through the game and never looked back. In the third and final game, Cortland once again relied on Patterson's thunderous arm to jump out to an early lead, but with a 14-12 advantage, Patterson was subbed out of the back row and had to watch from the bench as Setter Steven Strollo put his other hitters in position to seal the win. Eastern Illinois clamped down defensively and stopped the Red Dragons for three straight points and the lead. In the ensuing moments, Libero Eric Buggs stepped up and made multiple match-saving digs to keep Cortland alive. When Opposite Hitter Jason Aldrich's next attack found its way through the block and hit the floor, the team erupted into celebration as players and fans stormed the court. The win marks Cortland's first ever national championship. Bryan Patterson was voted the 2009 Division II Most Valuable Player. Strollo and Buggs both earned First Team All-Tournament status, and Aldrich was named to the Second Team.

Hokies Repeat as EIVA Champions, Brockport Claims D-II Crown
Posted: 4/5/2009
The Virginia Tech Hokies have won back to back EIVA East Coast Championships. In a thrilling day of collegiate volleyball at Maryland's Reckord Armory, the EIVA's best teams battled back and forth for nearly twelve straight hours, until there was only one team left standing.

Led by 2008 NCVF Coach of the Year, Sean Callahan, and a team of talented giants, Virginia Tech pummeled Maryland and Syracuse 2-0 in pool play. The Hokies were then stifled by the U.S. Naval Academy in a heart pounding three game match that ultimately went Navy's way (23-25, 25-20, 15-12). In other pool play action, the Penn State Nittany Lions went undefeated, not dropping a single game against Virginia, Cortland, and Pennsylvania. James Madison overcame Buffalo, Delaware, and Army to win their pool.

The quarterfinals saw Virginia Tech dispatch Buffalo 2-0, and Navy defeat Pennsylvania 2-1. The semifinals were highlighted by a clash of the titans, when Virginia Tech took on Penn State in a rematch of last year's EIVA Championship finals. Once again, the Hokie onslaught was too overpowering for the Nittany Lions. The Virginia Tech blockers controlled the net, and Setter Casey Doyle fed his horde of monster hitters set after set until Outside Hitter TJ Purcell put the final nail in the coffin (25-21, 25-19). In the other semifinal match, Navy's Opposite Greg Reichel and EIVA Conference MVP Austin Lanteigne were too much for James Madison to handle. The two teams traded blows until a Navy block sealed the Dukes' fate in game three (26-24, 22-25, 15-11).

The final match featured a rare showcase of talent and a rematch of what was perhaps the most exciting match of the day, when Navy defeated Virginia Tech 2-1 in pool play. This time, though, the Hokies were determined to exact their revenge. Reichel and Lanteigne did all they could to beat the Hokies, but the Midshipmen were ultimately frustrated by a relentless Virginia Tech attack. Game 1 went back and forth until the Hokies prevailed 33-31, despite Lanteigne's heroic effort to save a ball from going out of bounds. Virginia Tech had less trouble in the second game, as Libero Chris Hazell made one athletic play after another in the back row, and Opposite Bob Hoke hammered home three of the Hokies' last five points to win the game 25-21.

With the win, Virginia Tech earned the right to be called the EIVA East Coast Champions for the second consecutive year. Virginia Tech, Navy, Penn State, James Madison, Buffalo, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Virginia, Syracuse, and Cortland will all represent the EIVA at next week's NCVF National Championships in Kansas City, MO.

In Division II, SUNY-Brockport's Timothy Price and Terry Brogan led their team to victory over Liberty University in the championship match 2-1 (23-25, 25-20, 15-12). Brockport earned a tough 2-1 win over Virginia Tech B (20-25, 25-22, 15-8) in the semifinals, while Liberty defeated James Madison B 2-1 (25-16, 20-15, 15-8). Price took home the Division II Most Valuable Player award.

The tournament All-Star team consisted of the following players from each division:

Hokies Dominate South Division
Posted: 3/31/2009
Virginia Tech became the first school to win divisional championships in both Division I and Division II in the same season on Saturday, when both the Hokies' A and B squads captured titles in the EIVA South. The Virginia Tech A team defeated both James Madison and Virginia to claim the D-I championship, while the Tech B team triumphed over Longwood, Radford, Liberty, and JMU B to earn the Division II crown. Both teams will attempt to defend their 2008 conference championships as they enter the 2009 EIVA East Coast Championships as the South's top seeds. Last year, Virginia Tech claimed EIVA titles in both D-I and D-II.

Buffalo, Rochester Claim Titles in North
Posted: 3/30/2009
Buffalo defeated Cornell to capture the D-I North Divisional Championship on Saturday. With the win, UB has earned the North's #1 seed heading into the EIVA East Coast Championships. Despite the 2nd place divisional finish, Cornell will not attend the EIVA Championships, leaving the #2 spot to Cortland. Syracuse will be the #3, and Army the #4 slot. In the D-II North Championship, the University of Rochester claimed the title with a victory over Brockport. Rochester will be the #1 seed from the North, Brockport #2, Fredonia #3, and Syracuse B #4.

Penn State, Loyola Win Central Division Championships
Posted: 3/30/2009
On Saturday, the Penn State Nittany Lions became the 2009 Central Division Champions by defeating Navy in the finals of the D-I Central Championships. Penn State earned a tough 2-1 victory over Delaware in the semifinals before beating Navy 2-0 to take the crown. With the win, the Lions guarantee themselves the Central Division's top seed heading into next weekend's EIVA East Coast Championships. Navy will occupy the #2 seed, with Delaware at #3 and Maryland the #4. In the Central's D-II Championship, Loyola prevailed over Salisbury to claim the title, while Georgetown and UMBC round out the top four.

Nittany Lions, Hokies Sweep
Posted: 3/8/2009
The two teams that met in the finals of last year's EIVA East Coast Championships appear poised to rematch for the gold in 2009. #24 ranked Penn State came to Annapolis fully staffed and swept the opposition at the most recent D-I Central Play Date. After a dismal 2-3 record at the first D-I Central Play Date, the Nittany Lions exacted their revenge on their divisional foes by earning a perfect 5-0 match record, beating #12 ranked Navy and #22 ranked Delaware in the process. At last week's D-I South Divisional Play Date, Virginia Tech beat rivals James Madison, Virginia, and Duke to stay perfect at 5-0 atop the South Division. Penn State improved their overall record to 7-3 in the Central, but still trails the 8-2 Midshipmen. Action on the courts will continue to heat up, as the North, Central, and South Divisional Championships will be held in the coming weeks. The top four teams in each division will represent their regions when they qualify for the 2009 EIVA East Coast Championships, which will be held on April 4th at the University of Maryland's Reckord Armory.

Fightin Blue Hens Earn Big Wins in Central Division
Posted: 2/15/2009
The University of Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens created a buzz in the EIVA Central Division by knocking off rivals Penn State, Navy, Pennsylvania, and Temple during Saturday's Divisional Play Date. Led by the excellent play of Opposite Brian Wiest, Libero Pete Donatich, and Setter Dan Sandusky, the Blue Hens finished the day with a record of 4-1, losing only to Maryland. Delaware battled back from a 22-25 game one loss to upset the #24 Nittany Lions 25-23 in game two and 21-19 in game three. The Hens then earned a tough 2-0 victory over Navy (25-23, 25-23) before dispatching Temple 2-1 (25-16, 19-25, 15-10) and UPenn 2-0 (25-13, 25-23). The Midshipmen of Navy also finished the day with a 4-1 record, posting wins over Penn State, UPenn, Maryland, and Temple. With both teams tied at 4-1, Delaware assumes temporary control over the Central based on the head to head victory. The Midshipmen will have a chance to turn the tide when they host the second Central Divisional Play Date in Annapolis, MD on Feb. 28th.

National Collegiate Volleyball Federation (NCVF) Announces Official Incorporation
Posted: 12/26/2008
The National Collegiate Volleyball Federation, Inc. (NCVF) is a non-profit corporation formed in cooperation with volunteer collegiate club volleyball commissioners and representatives from throughout the United States. The primary purpose of this organization is to promote educational and organized competitive playing opportunities for male and female collegiate club volleyball student athletes. It is the only national organization in the United States formed specifically to promote year-long organized volleyball opportunities for male and female collegiate club volleyball leagues, conferences, representatives, players and their respective constituents and supporters.
The NCVF is an independent volunteer-based organization solely comprised of individuals whose grassroots philanthropic efforts have helped expand playing opportunities for college students across the USA. It has a board of directors, officers, a Player Council and commissioner/representative Advisory Council comprised of individuals representing the diverse geographic and demographic characteristics of the national collegiate club volleyball community. It has acted as an unincorporated advisory organization for many years, helping to formulate and promote consistent team and player eligibility rules, event formats, sportsmanship protocols, polls, seeding formulas, etc., and has performed a variety of other support services for clubs, leagues and various other individuals and organizations.
To help usher in a more organized level of support for collegiate club athletes, the NCVF has been incorporated as a non-profit entity. The commissioners of all recognized men’s club leagues in the country and a full cross-section of female club representatives participate in NCVF governance (the vast majority of collegiate club leagues, teams and players that participate in regional and national club competitions and events have a voting voice on the NCVF Player Council or Advisory Council). This solidarity will help expand potential sponsorship opportunities, contribute to event management decisions, support more coaching and training initiatives and advance a host of other supports and initiatives. Organizers are committed to working with student leaders, schools, school officials, interested organizations and individuals to promote and maintain the highest ethical and sportsmanship standards and achieve optimum participation opportunities.
The NCVF recognizes that the ever-revolving door of student leaders and participants raise and spend thousands of dollars each year to support year-long play and a season-ending national championship event, and that students desire that their hard-earned funds be solely devoted to the promotion of collegiate club volleyball opportunities. Toward that end, in October of 2008, the NCVF issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) seeking input from four national organizations: USA Volleyball (USAV), the American Athletic Union (AAU), the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) and the National Intramural Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA). The RFP targets the 2010 season and management of the 2010 national club volleyball championship event. It asks each of the targeted organizations to explain why they are best suited to collaborate with the NCVF, the students, and other vital stakeholders throughout the entire club season so that hard-earned student dollars can be more evenly distributed and used to attract more dollars, more support and more opportunities.
Among its other missions, the NCVF is proactively seeking to identify collaborators across the country who will invest in more than a single championship tournament event, and who will help the leagues, conferences, organizers and students increase quality training and playing opportunities for all collegiate club volleyball participants. During this outreach process, the NCVF will continue its work with league commissioners, representatives, players and others on the many issues that impact the quality of collegiate club volleyball training, competition and organization throughout the season leading up to and including the national championship event.

Midshipmen Looking Strong Early
Posted: 11/10/2008
It's only the preseason, but the Navy Midshipmen appear to be in midseason form. Navy ousted it's fellow servicemen in the All-Service Academy Tournament held recently at West Point. Navy first defeated Air Force 2-1 (20-25, 25-18, 15-12) and Army 2-0 (25-20, 25-23) to win the outright title. Following that performance, the Midshipmen, led by 2008 EIVA All-Star Austin Lanteigne, went on to win the championship at their own Fall Invitational tournament, held at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. After losing a close match to Yale in pool play, Navy responded by posting victories over Temple, Boston, and Maryland to claim the title. The Terrapins, Navy's EIVA Central Division foes, earned playoff wins over Delaware and Yale before losing to the Midshipmen 0-2 (17-25, 22-25) in the finals.

EIVA 2008-09 Pre-Season Underway
Posted: 9/18/2008
The Fall semester has begun on college campuses all over the East Coast, and many EIVA teams have already hosted tryouts, assessing and assembling their best players with hopes of competing for divisional and league supremacy. The 2007-08 season saw the Virginia Tech Hokies claim both Division I and Division II titles at the East Coast Championships. Virginia Tech Coach Sean Callahan also became the first EIVA coach to be honored as NCVF Coach of the Year. However, the Hokies and other top EIVA teams faltered against stiff competition in Dallas at the 2008 National Championships. James Madison and Buffalo earned the highest final placements, finishing tied for 9th. Penn State finished 21st, Pennsylvania and Virginia Tech tied for 25th, while Maryland fell in at 33rd. This year, with another successful season, the EIVA hopes to re-establish its teams among the nation's elite. A slew of pre-season events have already been scheduled, the largest of which will be James Madison's Derrick Beckner Memorial Tournament, expected to accommodate up to 40 teams. This and other pre-season events will help to decide which teams are the favorites to win the East Coast Championship. An updated list of competitions can be viewed on the Events page.

It was all Hokie all day Saturday, as Virginia Tech dominated the 2008 EIVA East Coast Championships, capturing titles in both Division I and Division II. The Virginia Tech B team claimed Division II gold with a two game (25-20, 25-14) win over Brockport, leaving just enough time to cheer on the A team in the Division I finals. After defeating both an upstart Cortland team and a determined Delaware squad in pool play, Virginia Tech earned a bye for the quarterfinals. Well rested and focused, the Hokies trounced the two-time defending EIVA Champion Maryland in the semifinals in two games (25-14, 25-17). In other semifinal action, the Nittany Lions of Penn State survived a back and forth slugfest with James Madison, who entered the tournament as the South's top seed. Penn State escaped in game three with a win (20-25, 25-23, 15-10), setting up a heavyweight battle with Virginia Tech. Outside Hitter Tom Heffner and Opposite Gary Vogel did all they could they could to match the Hokies' onslaught, but in the end, it was not enough. The Virginia Tech defense, led by a nearly flawless performance from Libero Chris Hazell, proved equal to each task, while the offense pounded away with kill after kill. Tournament MVP Casey Doyle meticulously orchestrated a relentless attack for the Hokies, allowing for the explosive arm of Opposite Bob Hoke to terminate set after set. Virginia Tech claimed the title in two exciting games, 25-21 and 25-23, giving Head Coach Sean Callahan the right to proudly distribute gold medals and the championship trophy to his team.

The tournament All-Star team consisted of the following players from each division:

JMU Reigns Supreme in South
Posted: 2/25/2008
At Saturday's EIVA South divisional play date, the James Madison Dukes proved that they deserve their top ten national ranking. JMU took the court ranked # 7 in the country and backed up that ranking with another sweep of their Southern foes, defeating Virginia, North Carolina, Duke, and perennial power Virginia Tech. The Hokies, ranked #10 nationally, battled back and forth with the Dukes before JMU prevailed 25-23, 18-25, 15-7. Over the years, the two teams have developed an intense rivalry. Although Virginia Tech defeated JMU in non-conference play twice this year, the Dukes bested the Hokies in both rounds of EIVA South divisional play. The Dukes now boast a 7-0 record within the conference, while the Hokies sit at 5-2. Updated records for all teams can be found in the Standings page. Though James Madison has solidified a top seed in the EIVA Championship tournament, all of the teams in the South will square off one last time on March 29th for the South divisional championship.

Nittany Lions Prowl Through Central
Posted: 2/18/2008
Pennsylvania is known for its rich tradition of volleyball excellence. With the women's varsity team winning the 2007 National Championship and the men's varsity team making yet another impressive run for their own, the PSU men's club team is also emerging as a dominant force in the world of college volleyball. The Lions roared over their opponents in the EIVA Central Division this past Saturday at the University of Delaware. Penn State finished the day with a perfect 5-0 record, defeating Navy, Penn, Temple, Delaware, and Maryland, proving that Maryland is no longer the team to beat in the EIVA. The Terrapins did not go down without a fight, however, as they came out strong in the first set winning 25-21. In the end, though, Lions prevailed, winning 21-25, 25-19, and 15-11 behind the stellar play of Patrick Vandenberg, Gary Vogel, and Tom Heffner. Navy also pushed Penn State to a decisive third game before falling. The Midshipmen, led by junior Outside Hitter, Austin Lanteigne, finished with a 3-2 record on the day, losing only to Penn State and Delaware. The complete scores can be found on the Results page, and updated divisional standings can be found on the Standings page. All of the teams will meet again on March 1st for another round of divisional play hosted by Penn State.

Latest NCVF National Rankings
Posted: 2/6/2008
The National Collegiate Volleyball Federation has released its first batch of 2008 national rankings. The University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh was the unanimous vote for first place. Oshkosh won the last two national championships in 2006 and 2007 and is looking to claim a three-peat. They are followed by perennial powers in the University of Illinois, the University of Minnesota, last year's runner-up Lakeland College, and UCLA. Four EIVA teams appear in the rankings as well. The James Madison Dukes fall in at #7, along with Virginia Tech #10, and Penn State # 12. The University of Maryland, the two time reigning EIVA Champions, enter this year's rankings at #15. The Terrapins finished tied for 3rd place last year after losing to Lakeland College in the semifinals of the national championship tournament. Maryland was also the last EIVA team to win a national championship, a feat they accomplished in 1996. The complete rankings can be found in the Ranking page.
